05/07/08:  Buttercup is an orphan foal.  She came to us at only 3 weeks old.  Her mom is a nurse mare and was sent off to another place so another baby could nurse from her.  That baby's mom had likely been sent to be bred again.  This is what nurse mares do -- have babies only to have them taken from them in order for them to nurse another mare's baby.

When Buttercup arrived, she'd had very little human handling.  She was very afraid.

We have another foal named Aaleyah Belle that had arrived only days before that needed a friend.  These two babies will grow together.  And hopefully, Aaleyah's mom, Momma Sue, will teach both babies the ways of the horse.

Trying to get her off the trailer took awhile, but we took our time.  She calmed and finally approached me, and that was it.  I guess she decided humans weren't so bad after all.  I can't imagine the stress these babies must feel to be taken from their moms -- and the stress their moms must feel.

Buttercup called out for her mom for many hours.

Momma Sue has accepted Buttercup and puts up with a lot.  She lets Buttercup walk all over her!

Buttercup trying to make friends with Aaleyah Belle.  It eventually worked out; but then Aaleyah had to go to UF for several days for her surgery, and Buttercup would have been lonely.  Another orphan foal arrived:  Golden Boy.  What a sweetheart!  But Buttercup liked to play a bit too hard for him -- plus, he wasn't feeling great due to an abscess that had to be treated.  He has since found a wonderful forever home with the help of Chris at Habitat for Horses.

These two have become very good friends.

06/12/08:  Buttercup is doing very well.  She did have her umbilical hernia banded today by our vet.

Buttercup had no idea what happened to her and was a very good patient!

Chloe, a 2 yr old nurse mare foal, had the same thing and there were no complications or discomfort.

Recovered and walking with Auntie Robin.

Going nighty-night after some meds.

She didn't feel a thing, but it looked pretty uncomfortable!

07/31/08:  Buttercup is growing like a weed!  She is absolutely beautiful -- she shines like the sun, and her conformation is as close to perfect as you can get.

Her disposition is awesome, and she loves human attention.  She is learning to respect humans and is doing really well.  We've been working on leading and manners -- she is a quick learner.

She loves to play in the water and she loves to show off!

08/01/08:  Beauty got a bath today and was put in a stall to dry.  She held her head out the stall window with hay in her mouth and Buttercup walked over and stole it -- she’s a brave girl!!!

Beauty is an Arabian and she won’t forget -– she’ll get even!!!

Buttercup and Aaleyah Belle spend most all of their time together, so we have decided to combine
Buttercup's updates on Aaleyah's page.  Please read about the girls there.

These are two orphan foals:  Buttercup and Golden Boy.

These two babies have much in common.  They are about the same age,  both born in April 2008.  Both had their moms taken away from them when they were about three weeks old.  Buttercup is a healthy and happy TB filly.  Golden Boy has scoliosis but is also healthy and happy.
