Susa
was a 5 yr old registered TB - a granddaughter of the great
Secretariat. We received a call asking if we could help her -
her 5-month-old baby was going to be weaned and then the mare was
going to be shot. We were told that during the birthing process
she tore and was never treated by a vet.
The mare was taken to one of our foster homes the day the baby was
weaned. She settled in that evening and was doing well - we
named her Susa. However, in the wee hours of the morning she
appeared to have colic symptoms. We called the vet, gave her
Banamine, and got her up. It was then we found that she had prolapsed.

When the vet arrived, she
examined Susa and said at this point there is nothing we could do to
save her. She was euthanized while her foster mom held her,
whispering to her that she is loved and will never have to know pain
again.
The
vet stated that even if she had been taken directly to UF on Sunday,
rather than to the foster home, the prognosis would have been the
same. The tear went untreated for so long that the damage could
not have been repaired.
How
she survived as long as she did, we will never know. It is
believed that the previous owner kept her constantly medicated so she
could nurse the foal. We did what we could for her but the lack
of care and concern from her previous owner went on for too long.
RIP sweet girl.
