Where Life Begins, Again!

If you see an angel under a horse's picture someone has volunteered to angel that horse!  A horse can have more than one angel.  To learn more about being a horse angel, a great way to help a horse in need, visit our "Equine Angels" page.

March 2007:  Magic, a 9 year old Arabian arrived.  You can tell he has a huge heart and is longing to trust humans again.

Sadly, Magic has been abused mentally and physically.  Beaten with a 2 x 4, used in the Mexican sport of "horse tripping," and used as a teaser stallion, he's had a very hard life.  Now that he's here, safe, his life will begin again.  He'll learn to know kindness and love and he'll never know an unkind hand again.

He arrived with lumps, bumps, bruises, scars, and what appear to be rope burns.  But he is very much alive and vibrant at times.  At other times he retreats into his own world and looks very sad.  He will need quite a bit of time to learn to trust humans again but we will work with him as long as it takes.

Click on Magic's picture to the right and you will be taken to his page where you can keep up with him and how he is progressing.

Magic is quite the horse - I wish I could read his mind!  I do enjoy working with him and he usually greets me with a loud whinny.  It's awesome when he stands tall and proud and lets out a huge whinny - the whole neighborhood stops and listens!  He wants to trust.  It's sad what has been done to him by humans.  His mental scars go very deep.

Abby is a Peruvian Paso mare that came to us from California in late 2007.  She's become best friends with Granny Jewels and is just a doll.

We hoped to have Abby be part of a to be established therapy program - she is gaited and a very smooth ride.

Abby has laminitis in the winter of 2008 and had a slight rotation in her right front foot.  She also has thin soles.  She is much better but our next concern will be preventing her from foundering on the spring grass of 2009.

Aaleyah Belle & Momma Sue arrived on May 3rd, 2008.  Momma Sue is a 16 yr old TB mare that gave birth to a baby on Kentucky Derby day - the day that Eight Belles gave her all at the derby - including her life.  We named the baby Aaleyah Belle in honor Eight Belles.  After she was born she was going to be shot because she had a wry nose and her mom wasn't wanted.  We were notified of the situation and picked both up that day.  Aaleyah Belle was only a few hours old.

Momma Sue was very thin and neglect was obvious.  We had the vet out right away to flush her out and put her on some meds to help make sure she didn't get an infection.  Neither the baby or mom had vet care after the baby was born.  Momma Sue is a good mom and loves Aaleyah Belle.  She's come a long way in a short time.  She and Aaleyah went to UF for Aaleyah to have surgery to correct her wry nose.

Just a couple of days before Momma Sue had a gassy colic and we were very worried.  The stress of poor to little nutrition, having a baby, and general neglect had taken a toll on her.  The vet came out and treated her and by the next day she was much better.  Many people don't realize, or either don't care, about what horses like Momma Sue go through.

Momma Sue's feet were horrible and have been trimmed twice since she has been here.  She has put on at least 150 lbs. and is looking awesome.  She, like her baby, have the most beautiful big brown eyes.

A nurse mare foal arrived only days after Momma Sue and Aaleyah Belle arrived.  Her name is Buttercup.  Over time, Momma Sue must have realized Buttercup had no mom and she has since started to "mommy" her too.  It is very nice to see.  All babies need a mom to teach them how to be a horse.  And Aaleyah Belle and Buttercup have each other to play with.

This is Momma Sue with Buttercup and Aaleyah Belle is on the far side talking with the vet.

Momma Sue on 6/17/08 - looking beautiful!

Click on Aaleyah's page for updates on her & Momma Sue.  Because others have come to love these two and contribute to their care, Momma Sue & Aaleyah Belle will remain at Beauty's Haven for as long as possible.

Thank you Fans of Barbaro for helping us to help them!

Anni is a 3 yr old TB filly that is as sweet as she can be.  She was a "no sale" last year at the 2 year old sale at OBS in Ocala.  She was turned out to pasture and forgotten about.

She needs to put on some weight but is otherwise healthy.

We are working on her ground manners and she will be started under saddle once she is at a healthy weight.  She's very personable and loves attention.

Bouie and Frodo are quite the pair!  These two have been pals for years and will stay together.  They both approach you if you go anywhere close to their paddock.  They get along good with other horses.  They just love attention and we love to give it to them!

These boys are very inquisitive and kind.  They are healthy and seem like two peas in a pod.  They seem to know what the other is thinking!

Bouie:   Bouie is a registered 10 year old that is 37" tall.  His right stifle locks up at times.  Bouie has had preliminary driving training and was ridden by riders under 50 lbs.  Bouie is very vocal and lets the neighborhood know it!

Frodo:  Frodo is 6 years old and 29" tall.  He is quite the character!  He almost seems like Bouie's shadow!  Froto has had no formal training.

10/16/06:  Bouie will be undergoing surgery to repair his locking stifle.  It doesn't seem to bother him but we're afraid that he may have problems with the hip on the other side if it isn't fixed.

10/26/06:  Bouie had his surgery was today.  Poor little guy hated leaving Frodo behind as much as Frodo hated Bouie leaving without him!  Frodo whinnied the whole time Bouie was gone.

10/28/06:  Bouie came home yesterday and rested.  He went out to play with Frodo today and once he started trotting he figured out that his leg wasn't locking - it was so awesome to see!  Once he realized his running wasn't impaired he ran and ran and ran!  It was an expensive surgery but we're glad we could help.

11/06/06:  Bouie and Frodo have very special angels.  They say "Thank you for being our angels  Mr. and Mrs. Davis!  Since Bouie had his stifle fixed we've been getting more exercise and running around having a great time - but we're being very good.  We we hope you have a very nice Thanksgiving!"

03/11/08:  The boys are doing great.  Both look like BIG teddy bears and will be getting a body clip soon.

The boys' whinnying "whoopee"
a day after Bouie's surgery.

Bouie - March 2008

UPDATE:  We hope to be able to take these
guys to visit with persons in
retirement homes!

Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Davis
for being angels to these boys!

Gentleman is a 20+ year old Percheron.  He came back us on Thanksgiving Day, 2007 in what the vet determined to be a "neglected" condition.  Now, he's eating great - 4 smaller meals a day and has hay 24/7.  He's gaining weight at a good pace and is looking better each day.  Click here to learn more.

He's back in green pastures with old friends - its almost like he never left.  He's getting good exercise and he is happy.  His eyes are bright and he holds his head high.  He's a proud horse again.  He's just as loving and as gentle as ever.  Click on his picture to read more about him and to follow his progress.

Gentleman
November 2007

Priceless!

After what Gentleman has been through we have
decided he will remain a Sanctuary horse
and stay here at Beauty's Haven.

Jewels is a 20+ yr old mare that was abandoned.  She's a Tennessee Walker / Peruvian Paso Fino cross - a Tennuvian!

She's been come to be known as "Granny Jewels."  She is a beautiful, kind, and proud mare.

Granny foundered in before arriving here.  She has had extensive farrier care and has improved greatly.

We are now working on getting her body to catch up to the changes in her feet.  Farriers believe she will eventually be sound enough for light trail rides.  Click here to go to her page for more information.

Jake, is a 20+ year old Draft/QH cross and a really sweet horse.  We bought him just as he was about to be loaded into a trailer that would have been the last ride of his life.  Jake was about to be transported to a Texas slaughter house.  He would have died a very inhumane death only to be become dinner on someone's plate in another country!  He had rain rot, thrush, open wounds, was anemic, and was very much underweight.

Jake has old injuries from barb wire to both front legs and feet which went untreated.  He has allergies sometimes which he is treated for.  Jake has a swayback from poor nutrition and has has arthritis in his back, hips and knees.  Supplements help and he loves to be massaged.  He loves people and is always looking for a treat.  He can give you looks that make you melt.

Jake was being ridden bareback to help keep him in shape until in 2006 when we made the decision to retire him because of arthritis which caused him the discomfort.

04/06/07:  We had a new barefoot trimmer out to work on Jake.  His shoes were removed and we are going to give his feet another chance to grow out naturally.

05/22/07:  Jake's feet are doing great!  The new trim technique is working wonders.  He tip toed for a few days after his shoes were removed but he is doing really well.

07/12/07:  Jake has a bad abscess in his right foot and another that is not as bad in his left.  These appear to be stemming from the old wire injuries.

07/28/07:  Jake's abscesses popped which gave him relief.

Aug 2007:  Jake got to meet one of his angels!  Barbara made a 2+ hour drive to meet Jake and spend time with him.  He LOVED the attention and he felt so special - you could just see it written all over him.

Nov 2007:  Jake received a complimentary pair of Cavallo boots and just loves them!  They truly help his feet and now he's all over the place.

Jan 2007:  Jake's feet have taken a turn for the worse.  He is having a very hard time - the weather has not been kind to him or to Bud.  He's staying in the barn now when it rains and at night so he won't be in the morning dew.

Feb 2008:  Jake has been turned out now for about a week now and he is good.  He's moving around better and has been feeling good enough to play with his old friend Gentleman.

July 2008:  Jake is doing well.  He still has good days and bad days but he remains active.  Everyone that meets him really likes him.  And he really loves his angel, Barbara (and her family).  She comes to visit each month and spoils him rotten!

Little E is a 28 year old Arabian gelding that is just as sweet as they come.  He arrived in August, 2007.  He's a tough one - he was struck by lightening about a few years ago and suffered burns on his legs, face, ears, eyes, and hips.

He is our "meeter and greeter" and he does a great job!

He has a wonderful and funny personality - whinnies when he sees you coming.  He really loves attention and lets you know when it's feeding time!

nurse mare foal.

Ruby is an Appaloosa special needs mare.  She has a very thin coat and can't stay in the sun - she burns very easily.  She stays in a stall during sunny parts of the days but gets to go out when it is overcast and at night.  She is on herbs to help her skin.  Even though she stays stalled on sunny days, she gets SPF 50 applied to her face every am and Aloe and Vitamin E every pm.

She is a very sweet horse that is always looking for a hug, treat, massage, rub, etc.  She loves to get the other horses stirred up which is good - they need the exercise!  She gives the most appreciative looks for just about everything done for her.  She is always willing to do what is asked.

Ruby came to us from HPAF and has a sad history.  She was forced to live in a paddock with stallions and was pregnant when she was confiscated by the county.  She lost her baby and we promised her she'll never have to worry about being with stallions again.

Ruby loves it when visitors come - especially the children.  She loves to take them for short rides.  She lets them give her all of the attention they want.  She is very careful and alert when little ones are around.  When she sees visitors coming she loves to welcome them with her whinnies!

Valentine is a 22 year old Hackney Pony that had suffered for days with colic and other issues before coming to the rescue.  Upon examination by the vet, we learned that she has sustained blunt trauma that resulted in nerve damage in her spinal cord and she had a lot of swelling in her hocks that travelled up to her tummy.  She had little to no sense of where her back legs were.

After being treated with chiropractic and acupuncture we saw an immediate improvement.  Val couldn't swish her tail before the treatment.  The next day she swished it one way.  Now, she can swish it both ways!  She still can't pass manure all on her own and we have to clean her out every other day.  We think she complies easily because she can't feel it but yesterday when I cleaned her out she was a bit uncomfortable - perhaps she is getting feeling back?  We hope so - she's a doll!

Velvet arrived in February 2009.  She is not a rescue but a mare that was loved very much by her owner.  Her owner had a change in life circumstance and needed to find a good home for Velvet.  She donated her to our rescue because she wanted a peace of mind knowing should Velvet ever be put up for adoption she would be protected under contract, as would her unborn baby.  Velvet is a 4 year old Warmblood out of Donnemeyer.  She has an awesome personality and is just a sweet, sweet girl.

Velvet's baby arrived in the early hours of April 3rd.  It was a difficult birth and the baby almost didn't make it.  He was just too big for Velvet's birth canal and his birthing had to be assisted.  It's truly a miracle that he is alive and doing well.  Velvet, and her baby, will remain together until the baby is weaned.  When, and if, they become available for adoption they will be moved to our "Horses" page.
