Cookie, a Paint mare that came to us from the Horse Protection Association of Florida (HPAF), has a very sad past.  She was confiscated by the county due to neglect.  They had to live a life of being tied up all day, everyday, with no shelter, fresh water, etc.  She was very thin and very pregnant!

Cookie came to us when she was almost half way through her pregnancy.  She was doing wonderful but sadly, in March the baby was born but didn't make it.  The foal was beautiful but she was too small and came too soon.  Cookie was very depressed.  She stayed for days in her paddock at the very spot where the baby was born.  We couldn't stand to see her so sad so we found a nurse mare foal at Freedom Hill Rescue named Chloe.  Chloe's story is told on the "Our Horses" page.  Chloe got Cookie out of her depressed state and Cookie is doing fine.

Cookie is a special needs horse.  With her white face and blue eye, she sunburns incredibly easy.  She must stay in a stall during high UV days.  Even though Cookie stays stalled on sunny days, she gets SPF 45 applied to her face in the mornings and Aloe and Vitamin E in the evenings.  Depending on the UV index, on some days, she can go out with a long nosed fly mask.

Cookie has limitations in her hindquarters.  She is ok with light riding at no more than a trot.  She will remain here as a Sanctuary horse.  She helps us to teach visitors about the effects of neglect and what it can do a horse and its unborn foal.

Phoenix is a naturally-gaited young Standardbred gelding that was saved at New Holland.  He is looking for a loving forever home.

Phoenix is about 3 yrs old and in very good health.  He gets along well with other horses and likes people.  He will make someone a very sweet, intelligent, smooth riding horse in a year or so.

Adopt him now and have the opportunity to build a great relationship with him before he starts saddle training, so you can already have a great horse-rider bond once he is trained for riding.

Phoenix is currently in the Romulus, NY area near Cornell University.
