This fund has
been established in memory of Grandma, a 27 year old mare that had
been neglected to the point of near death. She recovered enough to raise a
nurse mare foal only to have her life end short because her body was
not able to overcome old injuries and neglect. Her hindquarters
became too weak and her legs wouldn't support her. The long term
impact of her neglect, in the end, impacted not only her, but also a
nurse mare foal named Chloe that had been left an orphan, only days
old, when it was taken from its mother so she could become a surrogate
mother to another foal. Sadly, Chloe has been left an orphan
again because of the long term effects of Grandma's neglect and
starvation.
These funds will provide for emergent medical and health care, dental care, chiropractic
care and related treatment, and humane euthanasia, if necessary.
It will help horses that like Grandma that need more than the
average medical attention due to neglect and/or abuse. When
Grandma was recently injured and needed costly acupuncture, massage,
herbs, chiropractic treatments, and vet care, many caring people
donated funds to help her. The holistic vet and massage
therapist even donated their time for Grandma's first treatment.
This kind of support helps us to help horses tremendously. It
would just be impossible without support from others.
When we
removed Grandma from the lush 10 acres pasture she had been living on she was
very, very thin and weak from neglect - we did not know if she would
make it. She had no teeth to grind her food with and had been
slowly starving to death. No amount of green grass would have
kept her alive much longer. We had to find just the right diet
for her so she could slowly regain her strength. We fed her a
"mushy" meal 5 times a day. It took a tremendous amount of time, patience, and resources to care for
her. She was a "high maintenance" horse but she had served
humans well for many years - she deserved to be properly cared for,
respected, and had earned the right to cross Rainbow Bridge with
dignity. Her registered name is "Fooler's Satin."
Grandma taught us a lot during her short stay with us. She
reached into the hearts of many people across the nation. When
Chloe came to us, only a month after Grandma, it gave Grandma purpose and
strong will to live. Grandma was a devoted "mom" and loved Chloe to
no end. We were so in awe with them we shared the story of their
growing relationship and bond. It was a story that could make a
movie that would touch on so many emotions. Now, Chloe will have
to continue the story she and Grandma started with new chapters and we
will continue to share those chapters with everyone. She's a
special filly that is also loved by many across the nation.
We would like to pass on what we learned from helping Grandma to horse
owners everywhere in hopes that they will think hard about how they
care for their horses and what long term effects of neglect will do.
We want people to know there are alternatives to abandoning and
neglecting horses that are no longer of use to them so that they don't
discarded them like Grandma was discarded - like yesterday's trash.
And it isn’t always older
horses. Chloe was a nurse mare foal that also
would have been discarded if a rescue organization hadn’t stepped in
to help her.
