01/29/09:
A few days ago I saw an ad about 3 horses being sold for a total of $500.  This raised concerns about them ending up in a bad place where the could end up in the slaughter pipeline.  They were supposed to be 2 QH's and an Arabian - all 6 yrs old.  I called and was told they were all healthy - the family just didn't have time for them any longer.

I had to wait over a weekend to go see the horses as the owner had to go out of town.  When I got there I found 2 Appaloosa's and an Arabian - no QH's.  The paddock they were living in had barb wire, boards with nails sticking out, and PVC pipes laying all around.  The fence was about 3' high and the horses had leaned over it and broke many of the top connectors trying to get to the little bit of weeds on the other side.  I was told they had been in a larger paddock but had been pulling small palm trees out of the ground and eating the roots so they were moved into this small paddock.  There was no hay to be found.

I was told they Arabian gelding would kick and bite.  He did neither.  I had to climb over the fence to get in.  He came over and actually out himself between me and the owner that was on the outside of the fence.  He then leaned his neck against my shoulder.  I hugged him and promised him we'd get them out of there ASAP.  The owner seemed afraid of him but not of the 2 Appaloosa's.  The Appaloosa's seemed very hungry and worried - they appeared as all their dignity had been taken away.

Bobbi - 15 yr old Appaloosa mare

Pongo - 20 yr old Appaloosa gelding

The 2 Appaloosa's looked very sad, thin, neglected, and depressed.  The Arabian, even though very thin
and neglected, carried himself with pride - almost
as if he was saying "You can starve me, beat me,
do as you will - you will not take away my
spirit or my love of life!"

February 1st, 2009

All 3 of the horses seemed much more at ease today.

01/31/09:  Bobbi was treated by Sharon Cooper, a licensed equine massage therapist that graciously donated her time to work on Bobbi and Mystic today.  Bobbi was chosen because of what she had gone through the day she came to the rescue.  Her left jaw was pretty sore - her left eye is the one that was injured.  Her whole body was sore and you could just see relief come over her as Sharon worked her magic.

02/04/09:  Dr. Bess Darrow, our equine dentist came today to work on all three horses.

Little Robbi was very anxious but came through it just fine.  He's a very brave boy.  His teeth confirmed that he is 7 years old.

Bobbi's teeth were the worst and it took quite awhile for Dr. Bess to correct them.  She was a good girl though.  Her eye is much better and we don't think there is any permanent damage.  Bobbi's teeth confirmed that she is 15 years y oung.

Bobbi being doted on by Sue, a volunteer.

Pongo may be the oldest at 20 years old but his teeth were in the best shape!

He is such a laid back sweet horse that likely has many stories he could tell us if he could talk.

Bernice, another volunteer, helped Bess with Pongo - he was a very good patient too.
